NAVCP has done research on and brought attention to the vision health of the average American, with a focus on their intentions and provisions for caring for it. It was found in a 2016 study that Americans with vision benefits from their health insurance are almost 30 percent more likely to get an eye exam in a given year than those without insurance, as well as being twice as likely to receive up to date eyewear to improve their vision.
The report called for employers to include provisions for vision health in their employees’ compensation to combat a national deterioration in eyesight and eye health. This movement was mirrored by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2020, which unanimously agreed to set targets for improving vision health internationally. Its report claims that 1.1 billion people worldwide are living with impaired vision that could have been prevented, and that our workplace becoming more reliant on employees staring at computer screens for hours on end requires that employers care for their workers’ eyes more now than ever.
