The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an international organization that developed the Triple Aim framework with the aim of optimizing the performance of health systems used to deliver health care to patients. The main goals of the Triple Aim are to enhance the health of populations, better the patient experience during care, and reduce health care costs per capita. This framework was devised as a result of the increasing burden on the world's health care systems to care for an aging population of patients, many of whom are living longer and facing chronic health problems.
All levels of the health care system are called on to implement systematic changes to support the framework of the Triple Aim. A health care system that fulfills the Triple Aim would include the following key components: attention given to individuals and families, population health management, primary care service, structure redesign, integrated systems, and cost control strategies.
